Grosvenor Square Location Guide

Grosvenor Square is a large garden square located in Mayfair. It is the centrepiece of the Mayfair property of the Duke of Westminster, and takes its name from the duke’s surname “Grosvenor”. It was developed for fashionable residences in the 18th century. In the 20th it had an American and Canadian diplomatic presence, and currently is mixed-use, commercial.

Grosvenor Square’s architecture is a blend of Georgian and Edwardian styles. The aesthetics of its townhouses contribute to the square’s allure, inviting visitors to stroll through its landscaped gardens. The square’s central garden, designed by Sir Richard Grosvenor, provides a calming escape from the bustling city, offering a quiet place for some relaxation.

The initial development of Grosvenor Square goes back to the early 18th century and many of the houses and buildings were rebuilt in the latter stages of the 18th century and all through the 19th century. Grosvenor Square was designed as part of the Grosvenor Estate and was a prestigious area, attracting affluent residents, and played host to a great number of historical moments. One of these historical moments includes the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence at the home of the American Minister to the Court of St. James’s, now known as Macdonald House.

During the 20th century, Grosvenor Square played a role in diplomatic affairs. The square became a focal point for the United States, hosting the U.S. Embassy in London. The embassy’s presence in Grosvenor Square underscored the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, shaping the square’s identity as a diplomatic and cultural crossroads.

In recent years, Grosvenor Square has undergone a revitalization. The former U.S. Embassy building has been reimagined as a luxury hotel and the surrounding area is home to upscale residences, high-end boutiques, and a variety of restaurants, creating a blend of tradition and modernity.
