Green Park is a peaceful retreat located in Westminster. This iconic park offers a refreshing escape from the bustling city, inviting visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Green Park has a historic past dating back to the 17th century when it was initially part of St. James’s Park. Over time, it evolved, and is now known for its open spaces, beautiful tree-lined pathways, and vibrant flora. This is thanks to King Charles II, who created the park in 1660. He wanted to walk from Hyde Park to St. James’s Park without leaving royal soil and soon fell in love with the new park, taking daily walks.
Green Park is home to three war memorials, the Canada Memorial can be found to the east and the Bomber Command Memorial in the west. In the shadow of Wellington Arch lies the Memorial Gates which pay tribute to the five million people from India, Africa and the Caribbean who served in two world wars.
As you enter Green Park, you’re welcomed into a sea of lush greenery and vibrant flowers. The park is home to a variety of trees, including mature oaks and plane trees, creating a soothing atmosphere for leisurely walks and picnics. The carefully cut lawns provide a perfect setting for relaxation and enjoyment.
Some areas of the park are known to be popular with sunbathers and picnickers, however, there is a separate, simple charm to Green Park. Rather than a park filled with formal and arranged beds of flowers, Green Park is a place to sit, walk, run, enjoy wildflower meadows and listen to the songs of visiting birds.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to read a book, a scenic area for a family picnic, or a place to exercise, Green Park has it all. The park’s versatile spaces cater to various interests, making it a favourite among locals and tourists alike. It’s also surrounded by charming cafes and restaurants, offering the perfect opportunity to enjoy more than just a comforting walk amidst nature.
