Royal Academy of Arts Attraction Guide

The Royal Academy of Arts, situated in the heart of London, stands as a cultural cornerstone, offering a journey through the world of art and creativity. Established in 1768, the Royal Academy has played a pivotal role in shaping the art scene in Britain.

In 1775, Sir William Chambers won the commission to design the new Somerset House. It would become the first official residence of the Royal Academy of Arts. The Exhibition Room was 32 feet high and situated at the top of a steep winding staircase and was described as the finest gallery by literary critic Joseph Baretti.

In the 1830s, the Royal Academy of Arts moved to Trafalgar Square to share premises with the newly-founded National Gallery. However, with a lack of space, it moved again in 1867, where it remains to this day. Francis Grant, the President at the time, secured the new home for an annual rent of £1 for 999 years.

Now housed in Burlington House, a 17th-century mansion, the Royal Academy boasts a rich history and a commitment to promoting the appreciation and creation of visual arts. From its inception, the academy has been driven by a collective of renowned artists known as Royal Academicians, contributing to its dynamic and ever-evolving exhibitions.

Visitors to the Royal Academy can immerse themselves in a range of artistic expressions, from classical paintings to contemporary installations. The institution is renowned for its Summer Exhibition, an annual showcase featuring works by both established and emerging artists.

Aside from the exhibitions, the Royal Academy of Arts is home to the Royal Academy Schools, nurturing the talents of aspiring artists through its educational programs.

After indulging in the world of art, take a leisurely stroll through Mayfair, known for its ambiance and boutique shops. To wrap up your art-filled day, enjoy delicious food at our French restaurant in Marylebone, just a stone’s throw away from the Royal Academy of Arts.
