Savile Row Attraction Guide

Savile Row is a historic street in Mayfair in central London. This iconic location has been synonymous with bespoke tailoring for men since the 19th century.

In order to get himself out of financial difficulties, the third Earl of Burlington offered developers the five or six acres of land behind Burlington House in 1717. Savile Row was named after Burlington’s wife, Lady Dorothy Savile.

Originally named Savile Street and built between 1731 and 1735 as part of the Burlington Estate, Savile Row has a rich architectural history. Over the years, it has been home to notable residents, including military officers, William Pitt the Younger, and playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The street has also played a part in historical events, such as hosting the headquarters of the Royal Geographical Society and the iconic Apple office of the Beatles.

Savile Row is renowned for its traditional bespoke tailoring, with tailors setting up shop in the late 18th century. Henry Poole, credited as the creator of the dinner jacket, opened an entrance to Savile Row in 1846. H. Huntsman & Sons, founded in 1849, gained fame for tailoring military uniforms during the First World War. The street has evolved over the years, witnessing modernisation in 1969 with Nutters of Savile Row and the “New Bespoke Movement” in the 1990s, featuring designers Richard James, Ozwald Boateng, and Timothy Everest.

As you walk down Savile Row, you’ll come across a lineup of esteemed tailoring houses, each with its unique style and heritage. From classic cuts to contemporary designs, Savile Row offers a range of choices for shoppers. The bespoke experience goes beyond suits, with tailors often crafting shirts, shoes, and accessories.

After strolling down Savile Row, come into our French restaurant in Mayfair for a relaxing dining experience featuring some delicious food and wine.
